furieThe Long Island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation is honoring North Shore-LIJ Health System rheumatologist Richard Furie, MD, as the 2014 Walk to Cure Arthritis medical honoree, the health system announced today.

A former member of the chapter’s Board of Directors, Manhasset’s Dr. Furie was selected for his dedication to the Arthritis Foundation’s fundraising efforts to prevent, control and cure arthritis. He will be recognized at the May 17 walk at Belmont Lake State Park in Babylon.

“As a longtime supporter of the Walk to Cure Arthritis, I am extremely honored and humbled to be this year’s medical honoree,” said Dr. Furie, who will be walking with his team, Team Furie – NS/LIJ, in the event. This is the 12th year that the team will participate in the walk, led by team captain Ann McCally, RN, director of North Shore-LIJ’s center for infusion therapy.

Dr. Furie is chief of the division of rheumatology and allergy-clinical immunology at North Shore-LIJ Health System and a professor of medicine at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He directs the Program in Novel Therapeutics, the health system’s clinical research program in musculoskeletal disease. Dr. Furie also directs the hospital’s Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Autoimmune Disease Treatment Center.

Held every May in conjunction with National Arthritis Month, the walk draws thousands of participants to pound the pavement and raise money to help fight arthritis, which affects more than 50 million Americans. Funds raised support medical research, community education programs and patient advocacy initiatives.

Team Furie – NS/LIJ is inviting members of the North Shore-LIJ family and those in the community to join their team and help with their goal of raising $25,000 toward finding a cure for arthritis.
