OBITGuido_061516AJoe Guido, M.D., affectionately called “Doc”, died peacefully in his home on June 4th 2016 at the age of 90.  Born in 1925 in Astoria NY, Joe was the son of Mary Ann (Mae) Fyffe and Joseph Benedict Guido.  After graduating Xavier High School in Manhattan, Joe attended Cornell University but was soon drafted into the army his freshman year.  Shipped to Europe in 1945, Corporal Joe Guido landed in Le Havre France with the 65th Infantry Division which marched through France, Germany and ultimately Austria, finally intersecting with the Russian army in Linz.  Returning home, Joe finished his studies at Cornell and graduated from NY Medical College. Doc ultimately began a practice as a general surgeon, spending the majority of his career at St. Francis and North Shore Hospitals on Long Island.  On October 8th 1955, Joe married Jaqueline Mullen and eventually settled into a life in Manhasset. Joe is survived by his 5 children: Mary Ellen, Mary Jane, Marilyn, William and Joseph; 9 grandchildren, Taylor, Catie, Alex, Grace, Louis, Rachel, Christian, Gabrielle and Spencer and great-granddaughter Finley.

In addition to Joe’s everyday surgical practice, he acted as a police surgeon for the NY City Police Department, eventually retiring after 16 years of active duty.  Joe’s interests in cooking, flying, real estate and gadgets were only eclipsed by his true passion: golf.  Picking up the game in his late 30’s, Joe carried a nearly scratch handicap while converting his abilities into 9 club and 6 senior championships at Plandome Country Club, 1 club championship at Garden City Golf Club and 5 holes-in-one.  Joe’s boundless energy, zest for life and indomitable spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A wake will be held at Fairchild’s & Sons Funeral Home at 1570 Northern Blvd, Manhasset, NY on Tuesday June 14th from 7:00 – 9:00 PM and a funeral mass will take place the following day, Wednesday June 15th at St. Mary’s Church in Manhasset.
