As part of a teen community service program, teens made baby blankets for the baby shower to be hosted on Mar. 3 by the Ruth Circle of the Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran on Manhasset. A craft person demonstrated how to make the blankets and the group of young ladies and men then set to work and completed beautiful blankets. Susan Nolan, Teen Librarian of the Manhasset Public Library, coordinated the efforts of a few other Long Island libraries, including the Gold Coast Library in Glen Head and the North Bellmore Library, in the project.
The Baby Shower is an annual event hosted by members of the Ruth Circle of Manhasset and members of the Port Washington and New Hyde Park Lutheran churches are also invited to attend. The collection of baby items—clothing, handmade blankets, diapers and other necessities—are donated to the New Life Center in Uniondale. Layettes are assembled there by volunteers and are donated to deserving new mothers—referred by Social Services—for their new babies.
The Ruth Circle makes monthly donations to the New Life Center of canned goods and non-perishable food items along with clean, gently used baby items up to size 2 toddler. Anyone wishing to donate such items is invited to drop them off at the Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m, Monday to Friday. Enter the church building from the rear parking lot, and the donation baskets are half-way down the hall.
The participating students from Teen Zone and a parent are invited to attend the baby shower during which they will be acknowledged, thanked and presented with certificates of appreciation. Anyone wishing to join the festivities on Mar. 3 at 7:30 p.m. is invited but please R.S.V.P. by contacting the church office at 627-2430, Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran, is located at 1901 Northern Blvd., across from Crate & Barrel. Donations for the Baby Shower may also be brought the evening of the event. www.manhassetlutheran.org
