On Oct. 13, the Manhasset girls captured the Conference 2 championship and Division 2B title at Bethpage State Park over Calhoun, Elmont, Westbury and Carey. There were a total of 13 teams in the conference that Manhasset faced in the past five weeks. Leading the pack over the 5,000 meter race distance was Captain Catherine Matteo with a second-place finish in a time of 20:09. Third place was grabbed by Co-Captain Kayleigh Caggiano. The next three scorers were sophomores Emily Tsoumpas and Olivia Plansker, and freshman Samantha Derasse. These athletes scored 30 points over Calhoun’s 44. In cross country, the lowest score wins. Angela Tsoumpas, Lizzy Harris, Eliana Rozinov, Allison Weilep and Clarie DeBeneditis have contributed to the team’s success each week with great finishes and routinely finishing faster than most other teams’ fifth runner.
Highlights include a second-place finish overall out of 22 teams at the Suffolk Coaches Invitational. At the Nassau County Frosh/Soph champs at Bethpage State Park, the sophomores Emily and Angela Tsoumpas, Plansker, Molly Alpert and Jessica Zand finished second place. Seniors Caggiano and Matteo competed at the Brown Invitational and recorded personal records with a 18:53 and 18:56 over the 5,000 meter course. Both seniors are ranked for Class B schools in the state.
